This is one of my very favorite portions of Scripture! In essence the LORD tells Moses, “This is My proper Name: YHVH. I appeared to Abraham as “El Shaddai” (the all-sufficient One, or God Almighty), but by my name YHVH I was not known to them.”
God tells His proper name about 6,882 times in the Old Testament, using the Hebrew letters יהוה (from right to left the letters are Y (yud) H (hey) V (vav) H (hey)). Most English Bibles translate God’s name as “The LORD” (using small capital letters for the ORD), but in doing so they hide God’s proper name. Not good. The American Standard Version translates the Hebrew letters of God’s Proper name “YHVH” all 6,882 times it appears as “Jehovah” (JeHoVaH), for example:
And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, “I am Jehovah (the letters in Hebrew are YHVH): and I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, as God Almighty; but by my name Jehovah (YHVH) I was not known to them.” (ASV)
And God spoke to Moses, and he said to him, “I am Yahweh. And I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as God Shaddai (often translated as “Almighty”) but by my name Yahweh I was not known to them. (Lexham English Bible)
And God speaketh unto Moses, and saith unto him, ‘I [am] Jehovah, and I appear unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, as God Almighty; as to My name Jehovah, I have not been known to them; (Young’s Literal Translation)
In these chapters, YHVH tells us how it was His intention to show His might and power by delivering His chosen children (the children of Jacob, Israel) out of Egyptian bondage with His mighty outstretched hand in signs and wonders. He administered justice to the gods of Egypt, and to Pharaoh, through great plagues. What an awesome God we serve!
